How volumetric displays work
A simple, jargon-free guide to the technology behind true 3D displays — and how Revolumix is making them practical.
A real volume of light
Most 3D is an illusion on a flat screen. A volumetric display actually builds a 3D image in space, using light emitted from many different positions. The result is an object you can walk around — no glasses, no headset, no tricks.
A fast-spinning canvas
At the heart of the display is a thin surface that spins quickly — often hundreds of times per second. As it sweeps out a cylinder or sphere of space, it becomes a canvas at every possible height and angle.
Light slices, painted in time
A high-speed light engine projects thousands of 2D images each second. Each image is timed to appear exactly when the spinning surface reaches a specific position. Because the surface is moving, every slice lands in a different physical location.
Persistence builds the shape
Your eyes hold onto an image for a fraction of a second. The display exploits this: fast enough slices blend into a single, continuous 3D shape that feels solid and can be viewed from any angle.
Why it matters
Because the image exists in real space, depth feels natural. Multiple people can see different sides at once. It is the closest digital equivalent to a physical object — perfect for collaboration, visualization, and spatial storytelling.
